Direct Rail Services

Direct Rail Services is a Cumbria based national rail freight operator with a unique blend of skills and experience.

DRS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, and were established in 1995 as a lynch pin supplier of transport and associated services to the nuclear industry.

Today, DRS is a profitable and dynamic business that is achieving sustained growth, employing over 480 staff nationwide.

DRS continue to support the decommissioning activities of its parent body and have built on their leading position as a carrier of specialist freight, extending their services into the fast moving consumer goods and general freight market. This has taken millions of lorry miles off UK roads, cutting CO2 emissions and traffic congestion. DRS also provide Network Rail with infrastructure support, and provide passenger and charter services.

Safe, Secure and Reliable is at the heart of everything DRS does, delivering when it really matters and building services around their client’s business priorities.

DRS’s technological innovation is giving their clients a clear competitive edge, driving down costs, reducing CO2 emissions and increasing performance.

In 2014 DRS brought the highly innovative Class 68 locomotive into service, providing clean efficient traction for both freight and passenger services. In 2018 DRS introduced the Class 88 locomotive delivering revolutionary performance combining both 25kv electric and diesel electric operating modes.

  • DRS is thrilled to be taking part in The Big Rail Diversity Challenge for another year.

Promoting equality, diversity and inclusion is central to DRS’s core values and we are working hard across the entire organisation to ensure we have the best colleagues, from all backgrounds, and actively promoting underrepresented groups within our workforce.

The culture is being led from the very top of the organisation by Managing Director Debbie Francis and Business Service Director Natasha Hanson. Acting as strong role models for women within the rail industry they have been the driving force behind increasing the number of women who work for DRS and also encouraging women within DRS to seek opportunities across the business including driving, fitting and engineering.

Team DRS can’t wait to get stuck into the challenges and to meet other like-minded individuals from across the industry.
